Winner of the Canadian Landmine Foundation's Mark
R. Isfeld Essay Contest

On Friday November 3rd, 2006 the Canadian Landmine Foundation (CLMF) presented Morgan Vanderree, a grade 12 student from Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School, with the first place award in the Mark R. Isfeld Essay Contest. Launched last year, the essay contest is an opportunity for students across Canada to share their stories about the Canadian tradition of peacekeeping. "We are delighted to have

The essay contest was named in honour of a Canadian hero. MCpl. Mark Isfeld was a combat engineer who served in three peace missions before losing his life in a landmine explosion in Croatia in 1994. While serving overseas Mark was
known for giving children in war-torn regions handmade dolls that
his mother knitted. These 'Izzy dolls' brought a smile and a glimmer
of hope to children facing tremendous hardship. Mark sacrificed
his life in the pursuit of peace. |

| The
ceremony also served as the launch of the essay contest for 2006-2007.
Students across the country are encouraged to take up their pens and
write about their commitment to peace. The essay contest provides
students the opportunity to learn more about Canada's role in peacemaking,
peacekeeping and peace support operations and Canada's role in the global community. |
