CANADIAN LANDMINE FOUNDATION
Project funds transferred in 2000-2001

Nicaragua $100,000 USD/ $147,017 CAD
The Foundation's first demining project occurred in Nicaragua with project coordination through the Organization of American States (OAS). The project focused on the bridges along the main highway from Juigalpa to El Rama in the Matagalapa area. These mines were previously mapped in an adjacent field but were relocated by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

Bethlehem/ Husan $34,591
The minefield is located in the small town of Husan just south west of Bethlehem. The affected area is a residential one and stretches over 3-4 acres and is surrounded by about 12 dunes. The Mayor of the village made an official request to the Canadian Permanent mission in Ramalha for help with the clearance efforts. The project was brought to the attention of the Foundation through Canada's Mine Action Ambassador. Mines Advisory Group-UK undertook an assessment mission and produced a report.

OAS Victim Assistance $13,070
The OAS "Care Program for Victims of Mines and Unexploded Ordinance" provides assistance to landmine victims in the form of prostheses, therapy, medications, transportation from their communities to the rehabilitation centre, lodging and food. This humanitarian work began with a pilot program in Nicaragua and has benefited more than 250 landmine and war victims in that country who otherwise would be left with no chance of rehabilitation and reintegration into productive life in their communities.

BiH-022: $156,085 Service Clubs and CIDA
A 59,130 m2 field in southeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina is now clear. The field includes the entire village of Vranici a very old community that had been deserted since the 1992-1995 conflict. Clearance of area power lines will facilitate re-establishment of the community. 100 people who have spent years in displaced persons camps will be able to return home, rebuild their lives and rebuild their economies.

BiH-034-02: $52,576 Service Clubs and CIDA
BiH-034-03 $52,576 Service Clubs and CIDA
Two contiguous 8330 m2 minefield portions in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina, are now clear. Local inhabitants can now use that roadway to safely interact with their neighbours and market their produce.

CRO-039: $85,374 Foundations, Service Clubs, Individuals and CIDA
A 19,800 m2 minefield in Village of Spike Hamlet, Croatia. This was funded in 2001 and is scheduled for clearance in the spring of 2002. The village has 60 houses impacted by the conflict in the 1990's- 10 families have returned so far but live in dangerous circumstances.

Youth Mine Action Ambassador Program $71,000
The Foundation supported the operation of the YMAAP program through direct grant.
