Nicaragua $100,000 USD/ $147,017 CAD
The Foundation's first demining project occurred in Nicaragua with
project coordination through the Organization of American States
(OAS). The project focused on the bridges along the main highway
from Juigalpa to El Rama in the Matagalapa area. These mines were
previously mapped in an adjacent field but were relocated by Hurricane
Mitch in 1998.
Bethlehem/ Husan $34,591
The minefield is located in the small town of Husan just south west
of Bethlehem. The affected area is a residential one and stretches
over 3-4 acres and is surrounded by about 12 dunes. The Mayor of
the village made an official request to the Canadian Permanent mission
in Ramalha for help with the clearance efforts. The project was
brought to the attention of the Foundation through Canada's Mine
Action Ambassador. Mines Advisory Group-UK undertook an assessment
mission and produced a report.
OAS Victim Assistance $13,070
The OAS "Care Program for Victims of Mines and Unexploded Ordinance"
provides assistance to landmine victims in the form of prostheses,
therapy, medications, transportation from their communities to the
rehabilitation centre, lodging and food. This humanitarian work
began with a pilot program in Nicaragua and has benefited more than
250 landmine and war victims in that country who otherwise would
be left with no chance of rehabilitation and reintegration into
productive life in their communities.
