Peacekeepers Day - August 9th

The Canadian Association of Veterans in UN Peacekeeping (www.cavunp.org) has been working to have August 9th as "Peacekeepers Day". Their efforts have resulted in Proclamations across Canada. August 9th is the date in 1974 when 9 Canadian Peacekeepers were killed when their plane was shot down over Syria. Peacekeepers Day also recognises the countless Canadians who have served, or are serving, as Blue Berets and in other NATO and coalition missions. Historical references from CBC.ca

On Peacekeepers Day, learn more about the role Canadians have played in the pursuit of Peace and celebrate our history with peacekeepers and veterans. In your community encourage, and participate in, recognition of their service and sacrifice. Prayers and Mediations (PDF file) for Peacekeepers Sunday (August 7th).

In 2005, a project will be undertaken, near where the Canadian soldiers are currently serving in Afghanistan, in honour of the Buffalo 9 and a Survivor Assistance project will be undertaken in Cambodia in recognition of the sacrifice of peacekeeper's families. Funding these projects will cost $55,000. That means that out of 30 million Canadians, 1000 need to raise an average of $55. Funds raised in excess of the goal will increase the amount of land that can be cleared in memory of the Buffalo 9.
